People are just discovering the purpose of the McDonald’s McFlurry scoop

McFlurry lovers are just discovering the purpose of the infamous scoop.

McDonald’s iconic frozen treat has been a staple on the menu since 1998, and the odd-looking spoon is often the talk of the town.

Last week, a confused customer shared a photo of the spoon in a McFlurry on X, once Twitter, asking the question, “is that a straw or some kind of eating utensil?”

Golden Arches fans were happy to fill the user in on the secrets of the iconic spoon.

“It’s literally a ladle. They attach that scoop to a machine through that hole and it mixes the mcflurry to get a perfect mix,” someone explained. “That way, they both save on having to clean out a booster at each serving and they don’t waste it the ice cream that will get stuck in it.”

“It’s a special spoon that they actually attach to the blender to mix the slurry with, I haven’t seen a few of these because every time I’ve had a storm lately I’ve gotten regular spoons rooted,” added another.

“spoon designed to be used as a blender attachment used for mixing. it saves time, work steps and machine cost, – said one. – not actually designed to be used as a straw.

These spoons are likely rare these days, considering McDonald’s said it would ditch the iconic but confusing McFlurry spoons in favor of a more consistent design last October.

In September, the company announced that the old plastic cup and lid will be replaced with a four-clamp cup.

The change will reduce waste and help the company’s goal to source 100% of primary guest packaging from renewable, recycled or certified materials by the end of 2025, according to a press release.

“Packaging updates like this issue,” Michael Gonda, SVP, North American Influencer for McDonald’s, said in a statement.

“Not only is this a fun new way for our American fans to enjoy the McFlurry; we are also moving one step closer to meeting our packaging and waste commitments.”
